Parallel ride Berlin 11. November 2006

Parallel ride on the Nordring in Berlin

The photo shows the train with 03 1010 from the morning tour on 11 November 2006 in the station Potsdam Hbf.
On November 11, 2006 "Berlin macht Dampf" organized two round trips with a historic train hauled by engine 03 1010. There were two tours in the morning and in the afternoon starting in Berlin-Schöneweide station via the southern outer railroad circle, Seddin, Potsdam, Grunewald, the metro (S-Bahn) northern circle, the eastern outer railroad circle, Airport Schönefeld station back to Berlin-Schöneweide.

The picture shows the train on the morning tour during a stay in Potsdam central station. In a car composition of old fast train cars we spend the tour in the afternoon. We were a little bit disappointed when it was announced that it had been planned to have a parallel run with the historic train of the "Lausitzer Eisenbahnfreunde" from Cottbus hauled by engine 03 2204-0. But due to a defect of the turn table in the Schöneweide depot that train was delayed. Instead of this we enjoyed two photo stops. After leaving Grunewald station we slowly passed the old Western Berlin radio tower and the modern Congress Zentrum and stopped nearby to the metro (S-Bahn) station Messe Nord (Witzleben). After some minutes we got the information that we have to wait for some further minutes for the 03 2204-0 train which was short behind us.

It seemed that this has been the first parallel run for the engineers of both engines. We were lucky that 03 2204-0 with the historic cars flashed by so that the engineer of our train had to speed up like hell to follow them. All railroad enthusiasts in the train opened the windows. The trains passed the metro (S-Bahn) stations in a short distance leaving an impressive cloud of smoke behind them and blowing out flaming pieces of embers into the dark sky accompanied by a thunderous sound!

Then we approached the tail light of the Cottbus train. We overhauled car by car and passed the illuminated cab of the engine 03 2204-0 and the speedy moving driving wheels up to the front of the engine. The engineer of 03 2204-0 speeded up as well and we looked into the faces of thrilled train enthusiasts and other passengers of the other train on the opposite track. Then the tracks of our two trains diverged. it was an incredible experience even in the darkness of the evening!
